Product description
Orin Swift Mercury Head 2023 originates from the United States, within California’s renowned Napa Valley AVA. Created by winemaking visionary Dave Phinney, Orin Swift is famous for crafting bold, full-throated wines wrapped in distinctive packaging—most notably the Mercury Head, which features a genuine Liberty Head "Mercury" dime embedded directly into the glass of each bottle. Sourced from premier vineyard blocks across Napa Valley, including top benchland and hillside sites in Rutherford, Oakville, and St. Helena, the wine is built on a philosophy of uncompromising extraction, seamless oak integration, and opulent fruit expression. The 2023 release continues this tradition, delivering a dense, iconic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon of power and concentration.
Wine Description
This red wine displays an opaque, deep dark ruby-purple appearance in the glass with an inky core and vibrant violet highlights at the rim. It possesses a full-bodied, rich, and mouth-filling structure defined by a plush, velvety texture and immense structural weight. The sensory profile is explosive, aromatic, and decadent, opening with an intense bouquet of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, and dark plum preserves, seamlessly layered with rich secondary notes of dark chocolate, espresso, cigar box, toasted vanilla bean, sweet cedar, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, it delivers a massive core of dark berry fruit held together by ripe, fine-grained tannins and a surprising thread of natural freshness that keeps the wine balanced. The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and persistent, leaving lingering echoes of dark cocoa, toasted oak spice, and sweet dark fruit.
Varietal Composition: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Stylistic Notes: The grapes are hand-harvested from select micro-lots across Napa Valley and sorted with extreme precision. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with extended cap management to maximize color and tannic extraction. The wine undergoes aging for approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (with a high proportion of new French oak), adding signature notes of vanilla, toasted wood, and sweet spice without masking the dark fruit purity.
ABV: 15.5%.
Organic Status: While Orin Swift partners with growers practicing sustainable viticulture and precision water management across Napa Valley, this bottling is not certified organic.
Food Pairing
The immense structural weight, plush fruit intensity, and rich oak profile of Mercury Head make it a decadent companion to bold, savory gastronomy.
Fine Meats: Pairs magnificently with grilled prime ribeye steaks, dry-aged New York strip, slow-braised beef short ribs, or tenderloin of beef served with a rich espresso or dark chocolate jus.
Game & Rich Poultry: Ideal alongside pan-roasted duck breast with blackberry reduction, venison tenderloin, or braised lamb shanks with rosemary.
Earthy Specialties: Complements dishes featuring braised wild mushrooms, truffle-infused pastas, and roasted root vegetables.
Cheeses: Matches gracefully with strong, aged cheeses such as sharp cheddar, smoked Gouda, 24-month Comté, or Gorgonzola Piccante.
Vintage Quality
The 2023 growing season in Napa Valley is widely regarded as an exceptional, long-running vintage. Marked by a cool, wet winter and spring that replenished soil water reserves, summer brought steady, moderate heat without extreme heatwaves. This allowed Cabernet Sauvignon grapes an extended hanging time on the vine, achieving optimal phenolic ripeness, thick skins, and deep color while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Sourced from premier micro-sites during this extended harvest, the 2023 Mercury Head stands out for its structural density, polished tannins, and pure fruit concentration. Highly enjoyable in its youth following decanting, it possesses the structural integrity to cellar gracefully over 15 to 25 years.
