Product description

This structured and 'aristocratic' Champagne originates from France, within the prestigious Champagne A.O.C. appellation, specifically sourced from premier and grand cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs sub-regions. Produced by Champagne Palmer & Co a historic house founded in 1947 by seven grower families, renowned for its mastery of Chardonnay and its exceptional collection of library vintages—this rare late-disgorged library release (Collection Vintage) represents a monumental milestone in sparkling wine longevity. Sourced from high-latitude, chalk-rich vineyard parcels, the old vines are rooted in deep, porous Belemnite and Micraster chalk soils. Champagne’s cool, marginal northern climate allows Chardonnay to undergo an exceptionally long, gradual ripening season, accumulating complex aromatic precursors while preserving a razor-sharp, age-worthy natural acidity and intense mineral drive.

Wine Description

The 1985 Palmer & Co. Champagne Blanc de Blancs presents a mesmerizing, deep gold-amber color in the glass with bright brass and burnished platinum highlights along the rim, framed by an extraordinarily fine, delicate, and persistent bead. Its sensory profile is exceptionally mature, high-toned, and profound, delivering an energetic, laser-focused, and tertiary-driven portrait of aged Grand and Premier Cru Chardonnay. The bouquet opens with a soaring, ethereal display of dried apricots, candied lemon peel, and hazelnut praline, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of white truffle, toasted brioche, honeycomb, beeswax, dried flowers, and a distinct line of crushed chalk minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, sleek, and athletic, showcasing a succulent core of tarte Tatin, roasted almonds, and orange marmalade. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its rich, creamy mid-palate density. The mouthfeel is broad, weightless, and silky, carrying into an extraordinarily long, dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of salted butter, caramelized citrus zest, and toasted brioche.

This high-definition Champagne expression is 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested meticulously during cool morning hours. Following gentle pressing in traditional vertical basket presses, the primary fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve pure varietal and terroir expression. The wine completed full malolactic conversion to soften its formidable structural acidity before undergoing secondary fermentation in the bottle (Méthode Champenoise). Following decades of extended aging on its fine lees in the house's deep chalk cellars (crayères) in Reims, the bottle underwent delicate disgorgement with a minimal, perfectly balanced low dosage (Extra Brut / Brut style, ~6–7 g/L) to preserve its pure, mature tension. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 12.0% to 12.5% and is finished dry.

Vintage Quality

The 1985 vintage in Champagne is legendary, remembered as one of the finest of the 20th century despite severe winter frosts that reduced yields. A glorious, sun-drenched summer and idyllic autumn allowed the surviving Chardonnay grapes to reach extraordinary phenolic concentration, perfect sugar levels, and high natural acidity. Palmer & Co.’s extended decades of lees aging in cool chalk cellars protected the wine’s vibrant core, allowing it to acquire breathtaking tertiary complexity while retaining its structural backbone. The 1985 Palmer & Co. Champagne Blanc de Blancs stands at a majestic peak of maturity today, offering a rare, high-energy drinking experience for collectors.
