Product description
This rare vintage single-estate French grape brandy originates from the chalk-dense soils of Bouteville in the Grande Champagne premier cru, crafted by the historic family house Domaine Paul Giraud. Unlike traditional multi-vintage Cognac blends, a true vintage expression (Millésime) is subject to strict official oversight by the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac), requiring the aging casks to be sealed under wax and certified under lock and key. Distilled exclusively from the estate's 1999 harvest of 100% Ugni Blanc grapes, the wine underwent double distillation in traditional Charentais copper pot stills. It then spent over two decades aging peacefully in Giraud's humid cellars in seasoned French oak casks. Bottled at 80 proof (40.0% ABV) in a classic 700 ml bottle, it is produced without chill-filtration, artificial caramel coloring, sugar, or oak extracts (boisé).
Spirit Description
This vintage Cognac pours a warm, luminous golden-amber hue with bright topaz reflections and delicate, slow-forming tears along the glass. On the nose, it displays remarkable freshness and aromatic precision, leading with ripe orchard fruit, candied apricot, Mirabelle plum, and fresh orange marmalade, followed by layers of acacia honey, white spring flowers, fresh vanilla pod, and subtle toasted hazelnut. On the palate, the 40.0% ABV delivery is supple, graceful, and remarkably elegant. An initial rush of juicy stone fruits, poached pear, and dried citrus zest transitions into mid-palate nuances of mild baking spices (nutmeg and light cinnamon), grated cocoa, beeswax, and a touch of delicate, early-stage rancio. The oak is thoroughly integrated and silky, framing the fruit rather than dominating it, and underscored by a clean, chalky mineral freshness typical of premier cru terroir. The finish is long, crisp, and refined, trailing off with dried apricot, delicate wood spice, and lingering floral honey.
Accolades
Paul Giraud’s single-harvest vintage bottlings are celebrated among fine spirits collectors, master sommeliers, and Cognac purists as rare snapshots of specific growing seasons. Spirits reviewers routinely award Giraud’s vintage bottlings 93+ points, commending the house for resisting the heavy extraction, wood additives, and sugar additions common across larger commercial houses. Critics specifically praise the 1999 Millésime for showcasing the delicate balance between secondary oak maturity and the pristine, vibrant white fruit character native to Grande Champagne.
