Product description
This premier cru French grape brandy originates from the heart of Charente in southwestern France, produced by Domaine Paul Giraud in Bouteville, located in the prestigious Grande Champagne sub-region (Premier Cru de Cognac). Single-estate family-owned since 1650, Paul Giraud crafts this VSOP exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the area’s chalky soils. The wine undergoes double distillation in copper Charentais pot stills before aging in French oak barrels for a minimum of 8 years—double the legal 4-year minimum required for the VSOP category. Bottled at 80 proof (40.0% ABV) in the 700 ml format, it is produced without artificial coloring, sugar, or oak extracts (boisé).
Spirit Description
This VSOP presents a warm golden-amber color with bright yellow-copper highlights in the glass. On the nose, it is delicate, balanced, and fruit-forward, opening with aromas of ripe peach, yellow plum, and fresh apricot, underlaid by orange blossom, white honey, and a gentle touch of toasted oak. On the palate, it feels medium-bodied, round, and smooth, delivering an immediate wave of candied citrus peel, stone fruit, and vanilla bean before evolving into subtle mid-palate notes of toasted almond, light nutmeg, and soft oak tannins. The purity of the Grande Champagne chalky terroir allows the fruit brightness to shine without heavy wood astringency. The finish is clean, warm, and lingering, trailing off with impressions of dried apricot, subtle baking spice, and a refined oak warmth.
Accolades
Paul Giraud VSOP holds exceptional critical acclaim among sommelier circles and cognac purists for its additive-free purity and single-estate integrity. Earning top ratings across independent review outlets and guides like Wine Enthusiast and Difford's Guide, spirits critics praise the estate's patience in barrel management. Reviewers routinely highlight how 8 years of aging strikes a perfect middle ground—adding rich stone-fruit sweetness and soft oak structure to the young, floral character seen in their 'Élégance' bottling.
