Product description
This premier cru French grape brandy originates from the heart of Charente in southwestern France, produced by Domaine Paul Giraud in Bouteville, located in the prestigious Grande Champagne sub-region. Crafted by a family that has tended vineyards since 1650, Paul Giraud 'Élégance' serves as the estate's entry-level single-estate expression. Distilled exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the area's iconic soft, chalky soils (Campanian chalk), the wine undergoes double distillation in traditional copper Charentais pot stills. Maturing in French oak barrels for a minimum of 6 years (significantly exceeding the standard 2-year VS requirement), it is bottled at 80 proof (40.0% ABV) in the classic 700 ml format without artificial additives, oak extracts, or caramel coloring.
Spirit Description
This Cognac displays a bright pale gold hue with luminous yellow highlights and fine, fast legs in the glass. On the nose, it is delicate, lifted, and floral, opening with vibrant fresh white flowers, orange blossom, and jasmine, followed by notes of fresh yellow pear, green apple, white peach, and subtle vanilla bean. On the palate, it feels light-to-medium-bodied, silky, and clean, delivering an immediate wave of fresh vine fruit, crisp orchard fruit, and citrus zest before evolving into a soft mid-palate of light honey, subtle baking spices, and gentle French oak tannins. The purity of the Grande Champagne chalky terroir shines through with minimal wood heaviness. The finish is crisp, clean, and refreshing, leaving trailing impressions of white flowers, fresh pear, and a delicate wood warmth.
Accolades
Paul Giraud 'Élégance' holds exceptional critical praise among brandy purists, master sommeliers, and spirits journalists for its unadulterated purity. Reviewers on platforms like Wine Enthusiast and Difford's Guide routinely commend the house for avoiding boisé (oak syrup) and sugar additives. Spirits judges praise it as a benchmark expression for pure, unaged Grande Champagne terroir, highlighting how its young age profile preserves the bright floral and fruity character of Ugni Blanc.
