Product description
This premier cru French grape brandy originates from the heart of Charente in southwestern France, produced by Domaine Paul Giraud in Bouteville, located in the prestigious Grande Champagne sub-region (Premier Cru de Cognac). Single-estate family-owned since 1650, Paul Giraud crafts this expression exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes harvested from the estate's chalky vineyards. The wine undergoes double distillation in traditional copper Charentais pot stills before maturing in French oak barrels for approximately 15 years—well exceeding the official 6-year minimum required for the Napoleon designation. Bottled at 80 proof (40.0% ABV) in the 700 ml format, it is crafted entirely without artificial coloring, added sugar, or oak extracts (boisé).
Spirit Description
This Napoleon Cognac presents a rich amber-topaz hue with deep golden-copper highlights in the glass. On the nose, it is expressive, warm, and elegant, opening with aromas of dried apricots, candied orange peel, and yellow plum, underlaid by soft vanilla bean, toasted hazelnuts, and an emerging whisper of early rancio (polished oak and light leather). On the palate, it feels medium-to-full-bodied, velvety, and supple, delivering an immediate wave of dried stone fruits, orange marmalade, and light honey before developing complex mid-palate notes of sweet spice, cinnamon, integrated oak tannins, and toasted almonds. The prolonged maturation brings out a deeper wood structure while preserving the signature fresh-fruit clarity of the Grande Champagne chalky terroir. The finish is long, warm, and drying, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, cocoa powder, refined oak, and a soft spice.
Accolades
Paul Giraud 'Napoleon' holds high praise among spirits journalists, master sommeliers, and cognac connoisseurs for its unadulterated purity and exceptional age-to-price ratio. Earning top ratings across independent review platforms such as Wine Enthusiast and Difford's Guide, critics frequently note that Giraud's 15-year Napoleon rivals the XO offerings of larger commercial houses. Spirits judges praise the estate's restraint in avoiding boisé or caramel coloring, allowing the natural interaction between Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie and French oak to showcase authentic, unforced maturity.
