Paul Giraud Tres Rare Cognac - 700 ml

This pinnacle single-estate French grape brandy originates from Bouteville in the heart of the Grande Champagne premier cru, produced by Domaine Paul Giraud. Tending vines continuously since 1650, the Giraud family crafts Très Rare as their benchmark ancient cuvée. Distilled exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes harvested from the estate's chalk soils, the wine underwent double distillation in traditional copper Charentais pot stills before entering a natural, patient maturation in damp family cellars. Matured for roughly 40 years in seasoned French oak casks, it is bottled at 80 proof (40.0% ABV) in a 700 ml bespoke crystal-style decanter. In keeping with Giraud's estate ethos, it is completely free of chill-filtration, artificial caramel coloring, sugar, or oak extracts (boisé).

Spirit Description

This ultra-aged Cognac displays a luminous, deep amber-mahogany hue with polished copper reflections and thick, slow-creeping tears in the glass. On the nose, it delivers an extraordinary display of mature, textbook rancio, opening with dried Smyrna figs, prune preserves, candied orange peel, and dark apricot, layered over polished antique cedar, old saddle leather, beeswax, pipe tobacco, and dried yellow flowers. On the palate, it feels exceptionally velvety, supple, and weightless, gliding across the tongue without a hint of wood astringency. Concentrated flavors of roasted walnuts, dark chocolate, and orange marmalade unfold into delicate mid-palate notes of nutmeg, grated cinnamon, sandalwood, and a lingering, chalky mineral freshness unique to old Grande Champagne terroir. The finish is remarkably long, gentle, and ethereal, trailing off with dried stone fruits, antique wood oils, gentle cocoa, and soft, warm spice.
