Product description

This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from Italy, within the world-renowned Barbaresco D.O.C.G. appellation of the northern Piedmont region. Pio Cesare is an iconic, family-owned winery founded in 1881, based in the ancient city center of Alba. Under the dedicated steering of the fifth generation of the Pio family, the estate operates under a historic, classic winemaking philosophy that values regional authenticity, structural concentration, and minimal intervention. Unlike many modern single-vineyard expressions, this flagship Barbaresco is crafted using the traditional multi-parcel blending technique. The Nebbiolo grapes are sourced exclusively from the family’s premium estate vineyards: the renowned "Il Bricco" estate and the great hill of "San Stefanetto," both situated in the cooler, high-altitude village of Treiso. This deliberate combination captures a beautifully complete, classic expression of Barbaresco characterized by complex, earthy aromatics, exceptional finesse, and immense ageability.

Wine Description

The 2022 Pio Cesare Barbaresco presents a brilliant, moderately intense garnet-red appearance in the glass with bright orange-tinted highlights shimmering at the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally elegant, complex, and high-toned, offering a beautiful harmony of primary red fruits and savory, traditional Nebbiolo characteristics. The bouquet opens with a captivating display of sweet red cherries, fresh wild strawberries, and plum skins, seamlessly woven with complex underlays of white pepper, mint, dried rose petals, and a distinct touch of damp forest floor, anise, and iodine. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, structured, and remarkably polished, showcasing a focused, concentrated core of ripe red berries, pomegranate, and red currants. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and a balanced, refreshing backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the fruit's natural extract. The mouthfeel is sleek and velvety on the entry before giving way to fine, firm, and ultra-fine tannins that carry into a long, beautifully poised finish highlighted by savory wood spice, cedar, and a lingering touch of dark cocoa.
