Originating from Italy in the Tuscany region, specifically within the Costa Toscana IGT appellation in Riparbella, Prima Pietra Costa Toscana 2022 represents an ambitious, modern, and highly acclaimed Super Tuscan red blend. Owned by Massimo Ferragamo, the estate perches on one of the highest coastal hilltops in Tuscany at 450 metres above sea level overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines grow on rich iron-clay, rocky gravel, and sandy soils that benefit from marine breezes and abundant Mediterranean sunshine. Under general manager and winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi, the winemaking philosophy emphasizes plot-by-plot vinification, utilizing small stainless steel tanks, ambient yeast fermentation, and maturation for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels (approximately 50% new). The result is a opulent, seamless blend that combines Super Tuscan power with coastal freshness and refined structural length.

Wine Description

The wine presents an opaque, deep dark garnet red colour with rich crimson reflections along the rim. An expressive, highly complex bouquet opens with noble aromas of ripe blackcurrant, wild blackberry preserves, dark cherry, and plum curd, interwoven with sophisticated notes of Mediterranean scrub, dried rosemary, espresso, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and warm cedar spice. On the palate, it is full bodied, velvety, and mouth-filling, delivering concentrated flavours of black fruit, licorice, and savory mineral earth, all supported by a bright, mouthwatering spine of natural acidity provided by the high coastal elevation. Framed by rich, fine-grained, seamless tannins and a deep, coat-the-mouth mid-palate structure, it concludes with an extraordinarily long, persistent finish marked by lingering dark berries, sweet baking spices, and a clean gravelly mineral grip. Composed of a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, this 2022 release offers an optimal drinking window of 2025–2040.
