Product description
This structured and 'crystalline' red wine originates from Italy, within the esteemed Morellino di Scansano Riserva D.O.C.G. appellation located in the rolling coastal hills of the southern Tuscan Maremma. Produced by Fattoria Le Pupille the benchmark estate led by Elisabetta Geppetti, affectionately known as the "Signora del Morellino" this wine represents the pinnacle of traditional Maremman Sangiovese. Sourced from selection-designated vineyard blocks including the historic Pereta and Puntone sites situated at elevations between 200 and 250 meters above sea level, the vines are rooted in dry, nutrient-poor soils composed of sandstone, clay-limestone, and crushed gravelly silt. The Mediterranean microclimate features intense coastal solar exposure tempered by cooling afternoon sea breezes sweeping in from the Tyrrhenian Sea, allowing Sangiovese (locally called Morellino) to accumulate generous fruit weight while preserving a vibrant, age-worthy natural acidity.
Wine Description
Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Riserva presents a deep, luminous garnet-ruby color in the glass with vivid magenta and brick reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an energetic, expressive, and precisely focused portrait of coastal Tuscan Sangiovese. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of dark black cherries, crushed red plums, and wild blackberries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of dried rose petals, Mediterranean brushwood (macchia), sweet pipe tobacco, leather, and a distinct line of crushed stone minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, sleek, and athletic, showcasing a vibrant core of dark stone fruits, blood orange zest, dark cocoa nibs, and savory wild herbs. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and supple, framed by fine-grained, chalky Sangiovese tannins that glide into a long, dry, and savory finish accented by persistent notes of cherry skin, cedar, and forest floor.
