Product description

Scala Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore originates from Italy, within the southern Calabria region and the historic Cirò DOC. Perched on hilly terrain just a few kilometres from the Ionian Sea, the estate has been held by the Scala family since the 17th century, with the dedicated winery officially established in 1949. Now guided by Luigi Scala alongside his son Francesco representing the third generation of winemakers, the estate's philosophy focuses on preserving ancient southern Italian wine traditions through meticulous, low-yield manual viticulture.

Wine Description

This red wine presents a luminous ruby red appearance that develops light garnet reflections with maturity, and possesses a medium body with a wonderfully crisp, airy structure. The sensory profile is characterfully rustic, complex, and savory, opening with an aromatic nose of wild plums, sour cherries, and fleshy raspberries, layered with sun-dried tomatoes, dried tea leaves, wilted violets, and exotic eastern spices. On the palate, it delivers an energetic wave of fresh red berry fruits balanced by a distinctive vein of coastal salinity, structured by firm, finely integrated tannins. The finish is remarkably persistent, clean, and savory, showing an exceptional structural poise.

  • Varietal Composition: 100% Gaglioppo, a thick-skinned ancient variety indigenous to southern Italy.

  • Stylistic Notes: To preserve the elegant, refreshing fruit profile of the grape and soften its natural toughness, the hand-harvested fruit undergoes controlled maceration and temperature-regulated fermentation in stainless steel. It is then aged for 12 to 18 months entirely in traditional cement tanks, followed by an additional 6 months of refinement in the bottle before release.

  • ABV: 13.5%.

  • Organic Status: Cultivated under strict eco-conscious guidelines utilizing natural cover crops like lupins for nitrogen fertilization, this estate bottling is certified organic.

Food Pairing

The vibrant acidity, savory undercurrents, and firm tannic frame of this Gaglioppo make it an exceptional match for Mediterranean cuisine and earthy, flavor-packed dishes.

  • Meats: Pairs beautifully with classic osso buco, grilled lamb chops dusted with herbs, pan-seared veal fillet, or traditional beef meatballs.

  • Savoury & Hearty: Suggested pairings include stuffed red bell peppers, rustic wild mushroom and truffle risotto, or rich pasta dishes featuring a savory meat ragù.

  • Casual Staples: An incredible companion for wood-fired pizzas topped with pepperoni or spicy sausage, and savory charcuterie platters.
