Product description

This exceptional dry white wine originates from Germany, grown along the famously steep, sun-drenched banks of the Mosel valley in the village of Zeltingen. Weingut Selbach-Oster is a legendary, multi-generational estate whose winemaking heritage dates back to 1600. Currently guided by Johannes Selbach, the estate is an iconic benchmark for traditional Mosel winemaking.

The "Alte Reben" (Old Vines) designation indicates that this cuvée is sourced entirely from historic, rootstock-native vines averaging 45 to 60 years of age. This bottling serves as a leading example of Germany's modern dry (trocken) revolution, proving that the Mosel can craft dry Rieslings that marry incredible flavor density with ethereal weightlessness.

Wine Description

The Selbach-Oster Alte Reben Riesling Trocken 2022 is a deeply complex, savory, and powerfully mineral wine that trades typical entry-level sweetness for a textured, multi-layered structural core.

  • Appearance: Clear, pale straw-yellow with subtle greenish-gold flashes.

  • Nose: Strikingly deep, flinty, and elegant. The bouquet opens with delicate aromas of juicy yellow melon, green apple, and kumquat, intricately woven with savory nuances of sun tea, dried green herbs, acacia blossoms, and a pronounced slatey, petrol-tinged minerality.

  • Palate: Pure, crunchy, and beautifully stimulating. The entry delivers a refreshing, clean wave of tart tree fruit and white peach flavors. The mid-palate shows great concentration and density from the old vines, framed by a tight, mouthwatering, and wonderfully astringent vertical acidity. It concludes on a highly persistent, savory-saline finish driven by crushed wet stone and grapefruit zest.

  • Technical Details: 100% Riesling. The fruit was hand-harvested primarily from old-vine parcels in the southwest-facing Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard, alongside select old plots in the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, characterized by blue Devonian slate soils. The juice was fermented naturally using native yeasts and matured entirely in traditional, large neutral oak casks (Mosel Fuder). It sits at a highly drinkable, modest 11.5% ABV and is bone-dry.

Food Pairing

Because of its piercing acidity, bone-dry profile, and intense mineral spine, this old-vine Riesling is a champion at the dining table. It acts as a flawless counterpart to spicy or highly seasoned dishes, making it a spectacular match for Thai green curries, spicy seafood hotpots, Vietnamese pho, or sushi with fresh wasabi. It is equally brilliant alongside classic, brine-forward seafood dishes like ceviche, gravlax, and oysters on the half shell, or served with rich, creamy cheeses.
