Product description
This prestigious red wine originates from Italy, within the Toscana I.G.T. designation and the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Produced by Marchesi Antinori, a family with a winemaking history spanning 26 generations since 1385, Solaia is sourced from a 50 acre (20 hectare) vineyard at the Tignanello estate. The vineyard is situated at elevations of 350 to 400 metres on stony 'alberese' (limestone) and 'galestro' (calcareous clay) soils with a sun drenched southwestern exposure. The Antinori philosophy balances deep rooted tradition with continuous innovation, first producing Solaia in 1978 only during exceptional vintages.
Wine Description
The 2022 Solaia presents an intense ruby red colour with bright purple hues. The sensory profile is profoundly complex and aromatic, featuring a bouquet of dark fruits including blackcurrants, blueberries, plums, and figs, layered with floral hints of sweet violets. Secondary notes of Gianduja, powdered sugar, white pepper, tobacco, and quinine provide significant depth to the nose. On the palate, the wine is rich and creamy, sustained by 'extraordinary' freshness and energy. It is characterized by silky, mouth filling tannins that create a refined, tight knit texture leading to an intense and persistent finish with exceptional depth. This blend consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged for approximately 15 to 18 months in new French oak barriques and reached an alcohol content (ABV) of 13.5% to 14%. While the estate emphasizes sustainable viticulture and meticulous berry selection, this bottling is not certified organic.
Food Pairing
The powerful structure and spicy complexity of the 2022 Solaia make it an ideal companion for 'bold and savoury' flavours. It pairs perfectly with:
Roasted and Grilled Meats: Grilled ribeye with herb butter, oven baked leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, or classic Florentine steak.
Game and Pasta: Rich game stews, venison, or first courses served with hearty meat sauces.
Cheese: Mature and aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. For the best expression, serve at 18°C to 20°C.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 vintage in Chianti Classico was marked by hot and dry conditions throughout June and July. However, timely mid August rain showers and cooler nights provided 'much needed relief', allowing the vines to reach an ideal ripening phase. Winemakers successfully utilized the resilience of the vines and excellent autumn weather to harvest fruit of 'outstanding quality', resulting in a wine that balances the warmth of the season with a signature fresh acidity.
