Product description

This premium sparkling wine originates from Canada, specifically the east-facing slopes of the Okanagan Valley in Kelowna, British Columbia. Tantalus Vineyards is highly celebrated for its strict focus on terroir-driven, single-vineyard wines made from some of the oldest vinifera plantings in the country. While they are globally renowned for their electric Rieslings, their traditional-method sparkling program is a benchmark for the region. The Blanc de Noir is crafted exclusively from estate Pinot Noir, showcasing the depth and structural capacity of the variety under cool-climate conditions.

Wine Description

The Tantalus Blanc de Noir 2023 is a deeply complex, generous, yet heavily focused sparkling wine that beautifully pairs lively red-fruit attributes with serious autolytic depth.

  • Appearance: A delicate sunset pink or rose-gold in the glass with an incredibly fine, persistent bead and a velvety mousse.

  • Nose: Highly expressive and inviting. It opens with bright aromas of red apple and raspberry coulis, layered with more complex, secondary notes of roasted cashew, fresh-baked brioche, toasted sourdough, and a hint of early-season strawberry.

  • Palate: Unctuous, structured, and expansive on the palate, yet kept strictly in check by a driving, linear focus. Flavors of Gala apple, pomelo, and pomegranate dominant the entry. The finish is extended and beautifully defined by a subtle mineral edge, a whisper of sea breeze, and a touch of savory, chalky oyster-shell character.

  • Technical Details: 100% Pinot Noir. The fruit was hand-picked early in the season to maintain low sugars and elevated acidity. It was fermented in old oak puncheons and barriques using a Champagne-specific yeast strain, spending 6 months on fermentation lees in barrel. The wine then spent 22 months aging en tirage (on bottle lees) before being disgorged with a small dosage of Pinot Noir to elevate its aromatic profile. Technical stats include an alcohol level of 12.7% ABV, a sharp total acidity of 8.33 g/L, and a well-integrated residual sweetness of 6.34 g/L (Brut style).

Food Pairing

Because this is a Blanc de Noir (made entirely from red grapes), it carries a natural richness and structural gravitas that makes it highly versatile at the dining table. It is an extraordinary match for richer seafood like BC wild salmon, Dungeness crab cakes, or a plate of fresh, brine-forward oysters. Its combination of sharp acidity and creamy yeast character allows it to cut cleanly through fried dishes like tempura, as well as savory charcuterie boards featuring roasted nuts and earthy, semi-firm cheeses like Comte or aged Gouda.

Vintage Quality & Resilience

The 2023 growing season in the Okanagan Valley was a true agricultural rollercoaster. Following an extreme, record-breaking winter cold snap in late December 2022, the vines were very slow to awaken, delaying bud break until early May. Summer brought rapid, accelerated heat alongside the added complexity of regional wildfires, causing a significantly reduced crop yield.

However, the smaller crop resulted in grapes of remarkable flavor concentration. Thanks to meticulous, proactive vineyard management, the fruit stayed pristine and healthy. This allowed Tantalus to harvest early, capturing the bright acidity and delicate finesse required to craft an incredibly polished, vibrant sparkling vintage that will cellar beautifully over the next 5 to 7 years.
