Product description
The 80-Year-Old "Victory" Port—a rare, historic release anchored in the iconic 1945 vintage—originates from Portugal within the world-famous Douro Valley region. Harvested during the historic autumn of 1945 as World War II came to an end, this bottle stands as a living artifact of 20th-century history. Renowned Port houses, most notably Taylor Fladgate with their Very Old Single Harvest releases, preserved select casks of this extraordinary vintage deep in their lodge cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The winemaking philosophy behind this cuvée relies on decades of patient, unhurried wood aging. By allowing the fortified wine to evaporate and concentrate slowly inside seasoned oak pipes over eight decades, the winery transformed a legendary harvest into a pinnacle of intensity, complexity, and liquid history.
Wine Description
This fortified tawny port presents a deep, luminous amber-mahogany appearance in the glass with a striking olive-green rim—the visual hallmark of extreme cask age. It possesses a full-bodied, viscous, and extraordinarily concentrated structure defined by a silky, mouth-coating, and almost syrupy texture balanced by searing natural acidity. The sensory profile is astonishingly intense and multifaceted, opening with a rich bouquet of dried figs, medjool dates, dark raisins, and candied orange peel, seamlessly intertwined with secondary and tertiary notes of toasted walnuts, pipe tobacco, molasses, espresso, singed caramel, cedarwood, and antique furniture varnish. On the expansive palate, it delivers a wave of concentrated dark treacle, dried stone fruits, and warm Christmas spices, bound together by a vibrant acid backbone that cuts cleanly through its natural sweetness. The finish is virtually endless, lingering on the palate for minutes with residual impressions of roasted coffee, exotic spice, toasted nuts, and singed oak.
Varietal Composition: A traditional field blend of classic Douro grape varieties, dominated by Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão.
Stylistic Notes: The grapes were foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares and fortified with neutral grape spirit (aguardente) to halt fermentation while retaining natural sugars. Aged for 80 years in neutral oak pipes (approximately 600-liter casks), the wine underwent continuous slow oxidation and concentration through evaporation (the "angel's share"), yielding a wine of incredible structural intensity that requires no further bottle aging.
ABV: 20.0% to 20.5%.
Vintage Quality
The 1945 vintage in the Douro Valley is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest, most legendary Port vintages in recorded history. Following a dry winter and a hot summer with minimal rainfall, yields were severely reduced, but the surviving grape clusters achieved unprecedented sugar levels, phenolic concentration, and thick-skinned color extraction. Picked by hand during a season filled with global celebration, the 1945 harvest produced wines of immense power and tannic longevity. Decades of micro-oxygenation in wood softened those fierce young tannins into a seamless, velvety elixir. Today, 80-year-old bottlings from this harvest stand at their absolute zenith, offering a rare tasting experience that bridges world history and liquid artistry.
Food Pairing
The profound density, vibrant acidity, and complex nutty profile of an 80-year-old aged tawny Port make it a decadent standalone digestif or an extraordinary companion to rich desserts and sharp cheeses.
Cheeses: Pairs magnificently with pungent, aged blue cheeses such as Stilton, Roquefort, or Gorgonzola Piccante, where the wine's sweetness cuts through the cheese's salt and cream.
Nuts & Dried Fruits: Complements toasted walnut tarts, pecan pie, roasted almonds, and figs soaked in honey or dark spirits.
Desserts: Matches gracefully with high-percentage dark chocolate tarts, crème brûlée, sticky toffee pudding, or traditional fruitcakes.
Cigars: An exceptional pairing for a fine, aged Habano or full-bodied Dominican cigar post-dinner.
