Tomatin 36 Year Old

This rare Highland single malt Scotch whisky originates from the Monadhliath Mountains just south of Inverness, produced at the Tomatin Distillery (established in 1897). First introduced to the distillery's core Prestige range in 2015, Tomatin 36 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is crafted from unpeated Scottish barley and soft Highland spring water drawn from the Alt-na-Frith burn. The whisky is drawn from an assemblage of spirits aged for well over three and a half decades in a balanced combination of charred American oak ex-bourbon casks and traditional Spanish first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. Released in strictly limited, numbered small batches (typically around 800 to 1,200 bottles per batch worldwide), it is bottled in a premium bespoke bottle housed in a wooden presentation case, completely free of chill-filtration or added caramel coloring.

Spirit Description

This single malt displays a deep, radiant polished-copper and golden-amber hue, forming thick, slow-creeping tears along the glass. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic, complex, and layered with antique warehouse character: vibrant aromas of tropical fruits, dried apricots, ripe passionfruit, and candied citrus peel emerge first, followed by rich layers of raw heather honey, ginger snaps, butterscotch, and warm Oloroso walnut cake. On the palate, it delivers a remarkably silky, unctuous, and coating mouthfeel. Waves of sweet poached pears, dried mango, and Seville orange marmalade glide across the tongue, counterbalanced by mid-palate notes of dark chocolate, roasted chestnuts, warm clove, cardamom, and gentle antique cedar wood spice. The finish is exceptionally long, elegant, and warming, trailing off with impressions of dried stone fruits, beeswax, dark cocoa, soft licorice, and a delicate, lingering winter oak spice.

Accolades Tomatin 36 Year Old stands among the most decorated ultra-aged single malts in modern Scotch whisky competitions. It reached global acclaim at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where it was awarded Double Gold and crowned Best in Show / Best Single Malt Scotch (as well as Best Scotch overall). Critics and judges across Whisky Advocate and international tasting panels routinely rate it 94+ points, commending its exceptional balance: while many whiskies aged beyond 35 years become overly tannic or oak-dominant, this release preserves Tomatin's signature bright, tropical ester fruit profile alongside the nutty depth of first-fill sherry wood.
