Product description
This structured and 'muscular' red wine originates from Australia, within the world-renowned Barossa Valley region of South Australia. Produced by Torbreck Vintners an iconic estate established in 1994 by David Powell and named after a forest in Scotland where he worked as a woodcutter this cuvée serves as the essential introduction to Torbreck’s world-class, Rhône-inspired winemaking portfolio. Sourced from dense, low-yielding Shiraz blocks across northern and central Barossa Valley sub-regions (including Marananga, Greenock, Ebenezer, and Seppeltsfield), the vines range from young plantings to historic old vines rooted in ironstone, red clay, and gravelly loam soils. The Barossa Valley’s warm Mediterranean climate brings intense solar radiation during the day, balanced by cool evening breezes descending from the Eden Valley, allowing Shiraz grapes to achieve complete phenolic maturity, rich skin concentration, and plush structural texture.
Wine Description
The Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz presents an opaque, deep garnet-purple color in the glass with vivid crimson and magenta highlights along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and expressive portrait of classic Barossa Valley Shiraz. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of ripe black plums, crème de cassis, and wild blackberries, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of dark chocolate, sweet liquorice, black pepper, cured meats, espresso bean, and a subtle line of crushed stone minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, muscular, and athletic, showcasing a succulent core of dark berry compote, blood orange peel, dark cocoa nibs, and savory spices. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its rich mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and linear, framed by firm, fine-grained, and chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by persistent notes of black pepper, iron, and subtle oak spice.
