Produced by Bodegas Vega Sicilia Spain's most prestigious and iconic estate, founded in 1864 by Eloy Lecanda and stewarded with aristocratic rigor by the Álvarez family since 1982. Unico represents the ultimate pinnacle of global fine wine longevity. Sourced from the estate’s historic 210-hectare vineyard in Valbuena de Duero, the low-yielding old vines average over 35 years of age and are planted on a complex mosaic of 19 soil types across high-altitude limestone terraces, alluvial gravel, and chalky clay deposits. The harsh, high-elevation continental microclimate experiences extreme diurnal temperature shifts, where scorching summer days are followed by sharp nighttime cooling, allowing Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon to reach complete phenolic maturity while retaining a razor-sharp, mouthwatering natural acidity and noble structural poise.

Wine Description

The 2016 Vega Sicilia Unico presents an opaque, deep black-ruby color in the glass with vivid purple and garnet reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and regal portrait of high-altitude limestone terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of ripe black plums, wild blackberries, and cassis, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of dried violets, cigar box, pipe tobacco, cured leather, dark chocolate, espresso bean, pencil lead, and a distinct line of crushed chalk minerality. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense, and athletic, showcasing a succulent core of dark fruit compote, blood orange peel, and exotic sweet spices. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly elevates its immense mid-palate concentration. The mouthfeel is broad, weightless, and silky, framed by firm, fine-grained, and muscular tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of iron, black truffle, cedar, and subtle oak spice.

The meticulously hand-harvested fruit underwent rigorous optical sorting followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in oak vats using native yeasts. Following Vega Sicilia's legendary, uncompromising maturation regime, the wine completed malolactic conversion and aged for nearly a decade prior to release. The 2016 vintage spent approximately six years undergoing continuous refinement in a combination of 225-liter French and American oak barrels (both new and second-use) and large wood vats, followed by extensive bottle aging in the estate's deep cellars. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, generous alcohol content (ABV) of 14.5% and is finished bone-dry.
