Product description
This structured and 'crystalline' white wine originates from Argentina, within the prestigious Gualtallary sub-appellation of the Tupungato region in the high-altitude Uco Valley of Mendoza. Produced by Zuccardi Valle de Uco a pioneering family estate led by visionary winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi and named 'World’s Best Vineyard' three consecutive years this bottling represents a benchmark for extreme-altitude, terroir-driven South American Chardonnay. Sourced exclusively from single-vineyard plots situated at a dizzying elevation of over 1,300 meters (nearly 4,300 feet) above sea level, the vines thrive in ancient, highly calcareous soils composed of gravels covered with a thick mantle of calcium carbonate (chalk/limestone). Gualtallary’s extreme alpine desert microclimate features intense UV daylight balanced by cold mountain winds descending off the Andes, enabling Chardonnay grapes to achieve phenolic maturity while preserving an electric, age-worthy natural acidity and intense saline minerality.
Wine Description
The 2022 Zuccardi Botánico Chardonnay presents a luminous, pale straw-gold color in the glass with brilliant platinum and chartreuse reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an energetic, laser-focused, and chalk-driven portrait of high-altitude Gualtallary terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of fresh lime zest, green apple, and white peach, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of white flowers, lemongrass, wet stone, crushed chalk, and a distinct line of saline minerality, virtually untouched by sweet oak influence. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, sleek, and electric, showcasing a vibrant core of crunchy orchard fruit, lemon oil, and salted melon. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly across the mid-palate. The mouthfeel is weightless, supple, and linear, framed by a tactile, chalky texture gained from concrete aging, carrying into an extraordinarily long, bone-dry, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of lime peel, flint, and sea salt.
This high-definition Argentine expression is 100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested meticulously in small bins during cool early morning hours to safeguard delicate primary aromatics. Following gentle whole-cluster pressing, the juice was fermented using indigenous natural yeasts strictly in unlined concrete vats and large, neutral oak foudres. To preserve pure chalky tension and raw site-specific expression, the wine avoided heavy new oak manipulation and heavy lees stirring. It completed partial malolactic conversion naturally, aging in concrete vessels to allow subtle micro-oxygenation while sharpening its saline-mineral core. It reaches an effortlessly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 13.0% to 13.5% and is finished bone-dry.
Vintage Quality
The 2022 growing season in the Uco Valley was defined by cool conditions and low yields, producing Chardonnay grapes of extraordinary concentration and vibrant, high-acid balance. Sebastián Zuccardi’s minimal-intervention, concrete-focused winemaking allowed the chalky Gualtallary soils to shine with total transparency. The resulting 2022 Zuccardi Botánico Chardonnay offers high-energy drinking pleasure upon release and possesses the structural frame to evolve gracefully in a cellar over the next 8 to 12 years.
