Product description

This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from Italy, within the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation of southern Tuscany. Pieve Santa Restituta is an estate steeped in history, featuring a 12th-century parish church (pieve) at its heart, situated in the southwestern subzone of Montalcino. In 1994, the historic property was acquired by the legendary Angelo Gaja family of Piedmont fame, marking their grand entry into Tuscany. Operating under Gaja's signature philosophy of blending traditional site expression with uncompromising modern technical precision, the estate crafts its benchmark "Rennina" cuvée. The wine is a harmonious synthesis of three distinct vineyard plots: Pian dei Cerri (sandy soils providing tannic frame), Castagno Vecchio (deep soils providing perfumed elegance), and Santo Pietro (clay and fossil-rich limestone delivering mineral drive). This deliberate multi-site composition naturally yields a Brunello known for its lifted aromatic finesse, silky texture, and supple structural poise.

Wine Description

The 2021 Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta 'Rennina' Brunello di Montalcino presents a brilliant ruby appearance in the glass with a light garnet rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally elegant, deep, and high-toned, offering a masterfully transparent and graceful expression of its mixed clay-limestone terroir. The bouquet opens with a captivating display of sweet red cherries, wild strawberries, and blood orange, seamlessly layered with complex undertones of sweet violets, graphite, dried Mediterranean scrub, cardamom, and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, tense, and precisely focused, showcasing a dense and succulent core of tart wild berries and dark plum extracts. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and a lively, lifted backbone of natural acidity that cuts cleanly through the fruit weight. The mouthfeel is broad and velvety, driven by firm, crumbly-sandy tannins that frame its athletic frame before gliding into a long, dry, and salty finish accented by clear juice, licorice, and subtle gamy undertones.

This high-definition regional expression is 100% Sangiovese (locally known as Brunello). The fruit was hand-harvested at optimal physiological readiness across the three estate parcels. Following temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats, the wine underwent a meticulously calibrated aging regimen under the Gaja family's supervision. It spent approximately 24 months maturing in a combination of traditional oak casks (botti) and French oak barrels, followed by concrete vat and bottle refinement to polish its structural edges. It reaches a perfectly integrated, food-friendly alcohol content (ABV) of 14.5% and is finished bone-dry.
